NEWARK, N.J. — A wire service reports that thousands of train commuters were stranded for more than an hour during the evening commute Thursday when downed power lines halted nearly all rail service between New York City and Newark.
The outage occurred about 5:20 p.m., said NJ Transit spokeswoman Penny Bassett Hackett. It wasn’t immediately known what brought down the power lines, which serve trains running along the Northeast Corridor operated by Amtrak.
Some New Jersey-bound trains out of New York resumed service by about 6:30 p.m.
All Amtrak trains were halted, as well as all NJ Transit’s Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast Line trains running between New York and Newark, Hackett said.
A message seeking comment from Amtrak was not immediately returned.
