Two members of the House of Representatives have introduced a bill that would block Mexican railroad crews from bringing trains across the border into the United States The Protecting American Railroad Workers’ Jobs Act was introduced today (April 23) by U.S. Reps. Chris Pappas (D-N.H.) and Lance Gooden (R-Texas). It would require trains to stop at the U.S.-Mexico border for crew interchange and safety testing, with only U.S. citizens and permanent residents with a reporting location in the United States allowed to operate those trains in the U.S.

Mark Wallace, president of the Teamsters Rail Conference and Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, said the bill addresses “a critically important issue. … In repeated visits to the southern border, I heard one consistent message from BLET members: railroad jobs in America should be done by Americans.”
