The Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) is providing a new online service for retired members as well as assistance to BLET members who are still working but planning to retire soon. The RRB also has newly available information especially valuable for those who may be entitled to “dual benefit payments” from RRB and Social Security. Read on for further details.
New online services available to retired railroaders
Retired railroad workers receiving a monthly annuity from the RRB can now update their address and direct deposit information online. Previously, these services were not available to retired spouses or other annuitants — they had to contact a local RRB field office to make these changes. Retirees who wish to use this new option must register and login with the RRB website, RRB.gov/myRRB. Read more about this new option here.
Q&A: Dual benefit payments
The payment of a railroad retirement annuity can be affected by entitlement to social security benefits, as well as certain other benefits. Such dual entitlement, if not reported to the RRB, can result in annuity overpayments that have to be repaid, sometimes with interest and penalties attached. The RRB has prepared a list of questions and answers (Q&A) to describe how the RRB adjusts the railroad retirement annuities of individuals who are also eligible for social security benefits and/or other benefit payments.
